The Steering Committee is made up of one senior representative from each member organization.
Members meet in person at an annual roundtable to provide strategic direction to MGP, which shapes the annual work plan.
The Steering Committee philosophy is to support a collaborative, results-driven work plan to progress global methane reduction.
The MGP Network comprises practitioner-level representatives from member organizations.
It meets periodically to engage on how to implement the annual workplan and progress the initiative.
Taskforces are set up to accomplish a specific time-bound activity under the workplan.
They are typically made up of several representatives of member organizations.
Methane Guiding Principles has a dedicated Program Manager who drives the annual work plan and runs the organization.
Chris Rathbun joined as Program Manager in June 2022. He is supported by a Program Oversight Group comprising representatives from eight member organizations.
OUR WORK
MGP Initiatives
Members collaborate on initiatives designed to expand outreach across the industry and create practical tools to accelerate methane mitigation
Outreach
Advancing Global Methane Reduction
PROJECT LEAD:
Jump-start action toward emissions reductions and policy adoption
The Advancing Global Methane Reduction (AGMR) initiative aims to instigate and accelerate country-level methane emissions reductions, in support of the Global Methane Pledge. The AGMR is currently focused on 20 countries.
Share learnings and insights on how to reduce methane emissions in specific value chains or regions
Members lead engagements in their own value chain or region and share learnings with other members in focused working groups, in areas such as transmission pipelines and compressors and regassification. The aim is to identify key sources of emissions, mitigation actions and gaps in measurement technology in midstream. 21 organizations are currently participating.

Outreach
Partner Collaboration Campaign
PROJECT LEADS:
Collaborate to engage with mutual JV partners to identify mitigation opportunities and develop a roadmap to realize them
A platform to identify collaboration opportunities and share engagement approaches to engage more effectively on methane mitigation measures with JV partners on non-operated assets.
Target and support the next generation of companies on their methane journey
PROJECT LEADS:
Support companies that are not compelled by regulation or shareholder pressure, and those that are further behind the learning curve, to address their methane emissions, by sharing what members have learned as they put the principles into action.

Updating the MGP Best Practice Guides
PROJECT LEADS:
Originally written in 2019 and 2020, the Guides are at the core of MGP’s work. This initiative is updating the guides to reflect changes that have occurred and align with other MGP tools. The main focus is on flaring, equipment leaks, venting, operational repairs, pneumatic devices, detection, measurement and quantification, transmission, storage, LNG terminals and distribution. The revised guides were launched in July 2024.

Technology Initiative
Support and accelerate members’ adoption of methane mitigation technology
PROJECT LEADS:
Share practical knowledge on technology adoption to address specific pain points, raise awareness of emerging technical and improve understanding of effective methane emissions data management.

Methane-by-Source Tool (Mist) Update
PROJECT LEADS:
Free-to-use tool to help companies identify, report and mitigate methane emissions
This free-to-use monitoring, reporting and mitigation tool supports companies that are early on their methane journey or keen to advance. The tool builds on many years of experience and has been developed and recently enhanced by Carbon Limits with an increased scope, improved user interface and with a mitigation focus. The tool will allow companies to gradually improve quality of methane data by accommodating a variety of approaches.
We provide a range of educational options for those wishing to learn more about methane mitigation – from interactive masterclasses to online webinars and e-learning
