Announcement: Methane Guiding Principles Initiative to Retire

Having achieved its objectives, the Methane Guiding Principles (MGP) initiative will now be retired, with key activities transferred to other organisations and initiatives to seize consolidation opportunities.

The MGP Initiative was established in 2017 by eight pioneering members from industry and civil society, to catalyse the oil and gas industry’s commitment to methane emissions reduction.

Since its inception, the MGP has grown to include 50 members from industry, civil society and technology providers, all dedicated to methane emissions reduction across the entire value chain.

A forum bringing together businesses and organisations from across civil society, academia and industry, the MGP not only raised the profile of methane emissions reduction, driving industry-wide action, but also led to impactful action – through best practice development and dissemination, capacity building and the formulation of policy recommendations.

Cederic Cremers, Chair of MGP said “We celebrate the MGP’s achievements and the lasting impact it made, fostering a focused approach to methane emissions reduction within the industry. We look forward to seeing the momentum gained under MGP continue.”
