Frequently Asked Questions

What is MGP?

MGP is an industry consortium for energy companies and civil society organizations. Its aim is to accelerate efforts to reduce methane emissions across the oil and gas value chain—one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to limit manmade climate change. According to the International Energy Agency, rapid reductions in methane emissions from the oil and gas industry could shave 0.1 degrees Celsius off the potential rise in global temperatures by mid-century.

MGP’s work is centered around five guiding principles:

  1. Continually reduce methane emissions.
  2. Advance strong performance across the gas supply chain.
  3. Improve accuracy of methane emissions data.
  4. Advocate sound policy and regulations on methane emissions.
  5. Increase transparency.

MGP’s work focuses on knowledge-sharing, capacity-building and disseminating best practices among companies, governments, and research and advocacy organizations. Members lead and participate in one or more initiatives under the MGP banner:

  • Midstream Initiative
  • Partner Collaboration Campaign
  • MGP Outreach
  • Technology Initiative

In addition to these workstreams, MGP engages in numerous educational activities around methane management and reduction, including webinars, masterclasses and in-person events. It also hosts several resources for those looking to find out more about methane, including from partners and other stakeholders across the energy landscape.

MGP was founded by a coalition of eight leading energy companies:

It emerged from a roundtable held on November 22, 2017, in which the five guiding principles were promulgated. The eight founding members wanted to show leadership and recognized the need collaborate in order to address the global challenge of methane reduction. MGP’s founding was endorsed by the following organizations:

  • Sustainable Gas Institute (since shut down)

MGP members include some of the world’s largest energy companies, all of whom are committed to improving performance on managing methane emissions and adhere to the five Methane Guiding Principles. They are also active participants in our work—ensuring it is produced by hands-on experts who know the industry from the inside—and in our outreach, ensuring that MGP’s message reaches the broadest possible audience.

MGP’s membership also includes leading non-profit organizations, think tanks, industry consortia and multilateral bodies working to move the needle on methane emissions. These organizations produce guidance, data, insights and thought leadership that help move the industry forward.

We welcome as members all oil and gas companies committed to methane reductions. To find out more about our criteria for membership, please email info@methaneguidingprinciples.org or use our contact form.

MGP’s impact is measured most concretely in the actions of our members. As a condition of membership, organizations working directly in oil and gas value chains are required to submit annual progress reports demonstrating application of the five principles; these reports summarize actions taken over the preceding year and intended actions to be taken over the year to come. These reports show impact in several areas, including measurement, reporting and transparency, policy and advocacy, and technical solutions.
