Concerted efforts to tackle methane emissions throughout the oil and gas value chain will be high on the agenda at IP Week 2021, being held between 23-25 February by the Energy Institute (EI), a supporting organisation of the Methane Guiding Principles (MGP) initiative.
Held virtually for the first time in the conference’s long history, this year’s IP Week agenda overall will be heavily focused on the next ‘decade of delivery’ as the sector moves from the current crisis to opportunities in the low carbon future. Several CEOs of MGP signatory companies will address delegates, including BP’s Bernard Looney CEng FREng FEI, Equinor’s Anders Opedal and Total’s Patrick Pouyanné. The speaker line up includes leaders and influencers from around the world, across industry, NGOs, academia and government, including those involved in COP26.
Methane will feature in those high level discussions, in relation to the policies and technologies needed to accelerate the transition to a low carbon future. A session on Europe’s ‘methane moment’ will hear from Environmental Defense Fund and Shell. And a special session on methane detection and measurement in partnership with the MGP initiative will hear from the IEA, Enegas, Equinor, IPIECA and IBM.
When the EI surveyed international oil and gas professionals in 2018 it found awareness of the issue to be surprisingly low. Four in five of those asked were not
fully aware of the technically and commercially viable possibilities for reducing methane emissions through the oil and gas lifecycle. The EI is therefore keen to promote awareness of what its President Steve Holliday FREng FEI has described as “this most potent of greenhouse gas emissions”.
The 2021 conference will be a dynamic, interactive virtual experience, enabling delegates to move seamlessly from speaker sessions to networking to exhibition spaces. Attendance is encouraged for those engaged in all aspects of corporate strategy, business development and growth, and science and technology development – an opportunity for them to hear directly from some of the most influential figures is the field, to contribute to discussions, ask questions, and to further their own professional development.
