Governance Framework

The Methane Guiding Principles partnership is a voluntary initiative comprising of Signatories and Supporting Organisations. Signatories and Supporting Organisations recognise the importance of improving performance on managing methane emissions and are committed to advancing the Methane Guiding Principles.

Signatories

Our Signatories are companies with direct responsibility for the management of methane within their business activities in the oil and gas sector.

Supporting organisations

A Supporting Organisation is a global or major regional organisation which does not have responsibilities for the management of methane but which has significant expertise on methane.

Secretariat

The role of the Secretariat is to run the administration of the Methane Guiding Principles and set the annual workplan.

From 2020, the Methane Guiding Principles has a dedicated Programme Manager, supported by a Decision Review Board comprising representatives from four Signatories and four Supporting Organisations.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee is the governance and decision-making body of the Methane Guiding Principles and approves the annual workplan. Its philosophy is light-touch, collaborative, inclusive and action-oriented. Signatories and Supporting Organisations each have one senior representative on the Steering Committee and meet at an annual roundtable.

Methane Guiding Principles Network

The Methane Guiding Principles Network comprises practitioner-level representatives from Signatories and Supporting Organisations. It meets periodically and provides a means for Signatories and Supporting Organisations to engage on the annual workplan and progress the Methane Guiding Principles.

Task Forces

Task Forces are set up to accomplish a specific, time-bound activity under the annual workplan. Task Forces typically comprise of several Signatories and Supporting Organisations.
