The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), with support from the European Union, today launched a new Observatory to drive action on reducing methane emissions – a powerful greenhouse gas responsible for at least a quarter of the current climate warming.
The European Gas Research Group (GERG) has kick-started a first-of-its-kind research project to test the most promising site level technologies to quantify methane emissions in midstream assets, thereby reaffirming the crucial role of gas infrastructures in the energy transition.

Making climate neutrality a reality is a top priority for the European Commission,
as it is for the European gas industry. Representing around 4% of total European1
methane emissions, gas system operators have significantly decreased methane
emissions since 1990, thanks to the implementation of several mitigation measures.
The UK offshore oil and gas industry has made a new public pledge to cut its methane emissions just a month ahead of the landmark United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).
